New Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak will be confirmed as Prime Minister tomorrow.

Mr Sunak will have his first audience with His Majesty King Charles mid-morning tomorrow before addressing the nation from Downing Street

Before this, the outgoing PM Liz Truss will chair her final Cabinet meeting at 9am, before making a statement outside No10 and then travelling to the Palace for an audience with His Majesty the King.

The former Chancellor won the leadership election earlier on Monday after Commons leader Penny Mordaunt conceded victory.

Upon his victory, Sunak said: “It’s the greatest privilege of my life, to be able to serve the party I love and give back to the country, I owe so much to.”

"The UK is a great country, but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge,"

"I pledge that I will serve you with integrity and humility and I will work, day in day out to deliver for the British people."

He will become the UK's first British Asian PM and at 42, the youngest leader in more than two centuries.

Local MPs have reacted to the news throughout the afternoon, Bury North MP James Daly who supported the new leader throughout this campaign said on Twitter: "He will provide the stability and leadership our country needs.

Conservative MP for Heywood & Middleton, Chris Clarkson said: "A big job ahead, but a man more than equal to the task. Let's unite and deliver for Britain"

Labour MPs have also made their feelings known following today's news, Rochdale MP Sir Tony Lloyd said: “Rishi Sunak hasn’t said a single word about how he would run the country, yet despite this Tory MPs have ‘crowned’ him as Prime Minister without anyone having the chance to vote in this decision.

“As Chancellor, Mr Sunak failed to grow the economy, failed to get to grips with inflation and failed to help families in Rochdale and across the country with the cost-of-living crisis.

“It wasn’t too long ago that he was caught on video boasting that the Tory government siphoned taxpayers’ money away from “deprived urban areas” into wealthy ones.

“He was the Chancellor who made sure ‘levelling up’ was just another empty Tory slogan, and now he’s a Prime Minister with no mandate and frankly, no idea what the people of Rochdale need.

“The reality is that this country needs a general election because the public should be in charge, and we will put the case forward for a fresh start with Labour.”
