Six housing blocks could be torn down in one borough and Manchester’s tallest tower could be built in another.

Among a number of significant developments planned for Greater Manchester this week was the Lower Falinge rejuvenation plan. Six of the empty housing blocks could be bulldozed, if plans are approved.

In the centre of the city-region, blocks are earmarked for Manchester.

Viadux 2 is on the brink of securing planning permission, with the planning committee being the last hurdle next week.

If approved, the two towers, built between Lower Moseley Street and the Manchester Central convention hall, could become the city’s tallest.

Here is a breakdown of each borough’s submitted planning applications this week

Bury

Next step in Prestwich’s future

Work to transform Prestwich village’s centre into a ‘new beating heart for the community’ has taken a step forward with the appointment of a building contractor.

The team behind the £100m overhaul of the Longfield Centre and wider central area have appointed Vinci Building ‘to help bring the regeneration to life’. Vinci are the firm behind a massive 10 year project to deliver the regeneration of the New Covent Garden Market site in central London.

That project will see the delivery of over 500,000 sq ft of new market facilities across a 37 acre site which will house the 200 market businesses currently employing around 2,500 people.

The remaining 20 acres of land will be transformed into three residential neighbourhoods comprising 3,000 new homes and 135,000 sq ft of office space.

Manchester

Manchester could soon have a new tallest tower

Manchester could soon have a new tallest tower – so large that streets will need ‘realigning’ around it.

Viadux 2 is on the brink of securing planning permission, after planning officers recommended councillors approve the application next week. The project comprises two towers, built between Lower Moseley Street and the Manchester Central convention hall.

The largest, called Viadux 2a, will be the city’s tallest skyscraper at 246m and 76-storeys in height and feature hundreds of flats and a five-star luxury hotel backed by Robert De Niro.

Rochdale

Six housing blocks on ‘deprived’ estate set to be bulldozed

Six empty housing blocks on a deprived housing estate in Rochdale are one step closer to being demolished.

Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) wants to regenerate the Lower Falinge estate, and has determined bulldozing all the blocks is the only affordable option. The maisonette blocks set to be flattened are Zedburgh, Ollerton, Newstead, Romsey, Quinton, Ullesthorpe, and Vaynor.

If planning permission is granted by the council, RBH intends to level the empty blocks within the next 12 months.

Salford

Plan for 200 new homes in Salford could move ahead this year

Plans to build up to 200 homes in Salford could move forward later this year.

The work is based around a site at the Farmer Norton car park near Chapel Street, and falls into the £2.5bn Salford Crescent masterplan to transform the area. It marks the second phase of work at the site, following stage one which was submitted earlier this year for 42 affordable homes.

The regeneration scheme is being led by ECF, Salford council, and Salford University.

Tameside

New Lidl for Audenshaw in the works

A new Lidl could soon be coming to Audenshaw in Tameside.

The discount supermarket is hoping to build a new store where The Pearl Restaurant currently resides. The Indian restaurant’s lease comes to an end in 2029, after which the supermarket hopes to build its new site.

Lidl GB is hoping to gather the thoughts of locals before submitting official plans to Tameside Council.

Four new 15m telecoms masts planned for Tameside

Four huge new masts could soon be erected in towns across Tameside.

IX Wireless, the telecoms company behind the plans, wants to put up 15m metal poles in Ashton, Stalybridge and Denton.

The locations of the new masts are outside Rosehill Tennis Club on Gorsey Lane, Ashton; School Crescent in Stalybridge; opposite the car park on Marlor Street in Denton; and on the grass verge on Adlington Way in Denton.

If approved by the council, IX Wireless believes the masts would help boost internet connectivity.
