Andrew Cowan, Senior Operations Manager in Bury Council Schools Catering is marking World Down Syndrome Day by running from Liverpool to Bury tomorrow (Friday).
His 3-year-old daughter has Down Syndrome, and he wants to raise money for the two charities which have supported him and his family.
The 21st of March (the 3rd month of the year) was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. Every year on March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day is observed to create awareness.
He's raising money for Positive about Down Syndrome (PADS) and Down Syndrome UK (DSUK), the JustGiving page was set up last week and raised over £1,000 in 24 hours.
Andrew explains the meaning behind the fundraiser on the Just Giving page: "PADS and DSUK have been amazing resources for us, right from Isla-J's prenatal diagnosis, up until today. We have met parents, made friends, attended training sessions, had questions answered, and celebrated all of IJs milestones with this wonderful community. They work tirelessly to end the outdated medical attitudes & social stigmas of DS, and they do an incredible job.
"In honour of World Down Syndrome Day on the 21st of March 2025, I will be taking on a huge challenge; running from my old stomping ground of Liverpool, back to Manchester. No donation is too small, and every donation will help families like us to celebrate their wonderful children.
"We couldn't be prouder of our amazing little lady and we hope you'll help us celebrate her and this fantastic organization."
Andrew spoke to Roch Valley Radio earlier today about the challenge. You can tune in below:
