Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is working shoulder-to-shoulder with partners and the local authority to prevent and detect serious and violent crime in Salford.
In light of recent incidents in the area since January 2023, GMP has stepped up the policing response to demonstrate that violence will not be tolerated. Part of this involves improving the investigative approach and securing the best outcomes for victims of serious violence.
On 13 January 2023, following reports of a stabbing detectives from Salford worked tirelessly, pursuing multiple complex lines of enquiry which resulted in the charge and remand of Kaden Worthington (02/01/03) of no fixed abode with attempted murder.
Salford Detectives are also utilising new and innovative investigation techniques to identify suspects at the earliest opportunity to bring offenders to justice. In relation to a report of a stabbing on 24 January 2023, officers acted swiftly and arrested a suspect within hours of the incident occurring. Following an intensive investigation by detectives - supported by Force Specialists - the suspect was charged and remanded to court with an offence of attempted murder.
Since 24 January 2023, police in Salford have also been using overt and covert policing tactics as well as stop and search powers where appropriate to prevent serious violence, find weapons and apprehend those carrying weapons.
Additional uniformed officers have been deployed across Salford and across the force more widely to deter offenders and provide reassurance to the local community. These officers are supported by plain clothes officers who work proactively to detect criminal activity.
Chief Superintendent Anthony Creely of GMP Salford Division said: “Every life lost to serious violence and knife crime is a tragedy and GMP Salford is committed to preventing and reducing this type of crime and making communities safer.
“Officers are ramping up efforts to crackdown on the issue and are working closely with GMP’s dedicated team tackling serious violence and knife crime – Operation Venture – as well as drawing on other specialist resources from across the force.
“Within the first few months of this year, several significant arrests have been made and a number of weapons seized, which will go some way to keeping communities safe.
“There has been an increase of stop and search within Salford since the start of the year, which is an important and effective policing tactic used to keep the public safe. Officers ensure that all searches are carried out in a lawful and ethical manner.
“GMP also regularly provides enhanced support to investigation teams from Force Subject Matter Experts and Specialist Investigators to achieve the best possible outcome for victims.
"Whilst policing has an important part to play in tackling knife crime, we cannot however enforce our way out of the problem. Communities need to come together and if you know someone is carrying a knife, please challenge that behaviour.
