People travelling into or out of Manchester on Monday are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys as Manchester City prepare to hold an open-top bus parade after securing a historic treble.
With thousands of supporters expected to line the route, which will require several road closures across the city centre, significant delays are expected to journey times by road – including bus routes – from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.
The parade will start on Deansgate before turning onto St Mary Gate, Cross Street, King Street, Brown Street, Booth Street, Nicholas Street, George Street before ending on Princess Street near St Peter’s Square.
Manchester City players will then be presented on a stage on Oxford Street, which will also feature a viewing area for fans. There will also be an increased police presence around the city centre to keep people safe.
Fans wishing to attend the parade are being encouraged to travel by Metrolink to one of the city centre stops (St Peter's Square, Victoria) but to avoid alighting at Deansgate due to the staging of the event.
A number of roads across the city centre will be closed for the route and there is likely to be congestion on roads that remain open. More dedicated travel advice, including bus route diversions, can be found on TfGM’s website.
Sean Dyball, TfGM’s Head of Customer Experience, said: “We want to congratulate Manchester City on winning the Champions League and securing the treble, and we are expecting thousands of people will be coming into the city to join in the celebrations during the bus parade.
“This will mean that there will be increased footfall, as well as congestion on roads, in and around the city centre.
“We are advising anyone planning to attend the parade to use Metrolink to travel to one of the stops, though to avoid Deansgate due to the staging of the event. Paying by contactless remains the most convenient way to pay for tram travel.
“People who work in the city centre are also being encouraged to re-time their journey and leave earlier, or to work from home on Monday if possible to avoid delays.”
GMP Superintendent, Gareth Parkin, said: "The Man City victory parade will attract thousands of supporters into the city centre to celebrate club’s triumphant season after winning the European Championship trophy for the first time ever.
“The parade will be a joyous occasion for the community to come together. GMP has been working with partners to ensure a smooth-running and safe event, and while we expect the vast majority of people coming together to be genuine fans, we urge you not to drink in excess or be involved in anti-social behaviour.
“Those attending should keep their belongings safe and report anything suspicious to police. There will be an increased police presence around the city centre. They are there to keep you safe. Crime can be reported via gmp.police.uk or 101. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
